Toenail Removal Surgery

Toenail Removal Surgery
This information page aims to help you understand toenail removal surgery, a common procedure performed by podiatrists to address various toenail problems.
What is Toenail Removal Surgery?
Toenail removal surgery, also known as nail avulsion, involves the partial or complete removal of a toenail. This procedure is typically recommended when conservative treatments have failed to resolve persistent toenail issues.
Reasons for Toenail Removal:
Ingrown Toenails:
When the corner of the toenail grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain, redness, swelling, and infection.
Thickened or Fungal Nails:
Severely thickened or fungal-infected nails that cause pain or discomfort and are unresponsive to other treatments.
Trauma or Injury: Damaged toenails that are painful or prone to repeated infections.
Recurring Nail Infections: Chronic infections that don't respond to medication.
Pincer Nails:
Overly curved nails that pinch the surrounding skin.
Types of Toenail Removal:
Partial Nail Avulsion (PNA):
Removal of a portion of the toenail, usually the ingrown edge.
Total Nail Avulsion (TNA): Complete removal of the entire toenail.
Matrix Phenolisation:
A chemical procedure performed after partial or total nail avulsion to prevent regrowth of the removed portion of the nail. This is done by applying phenol to the nail matrix (the nail's growth centre).
What to Expect During the Procedure:
Local Anesthesia:
A local anaesthetic injection will numb the toe, ensuring a painless procedure.
Nail Removal: The podiatrist will carefully remove the affected portion or the entire toenail using specialized instruments.
Matrix Phenolisation (if required): Phenol is applied to the nail matrix to prevent regrowth.
Dressing:
The toe will be dressed with a sterile bandage.
Aftercare Instructions:
Keep the dressing clean and dry.
Avoid strenuous activity for a few days.
Wear comfortable, open-toed shoes or sandals.
Elevate your foot to reduce swelling.
Take prescribed pain medication as needed.
Follow the podiatrist's instructions for dressing changes and wound care.
Attend all follow up appointments.
Avoid tight shoes for several weeks after the procedure.
Potential Risks and Complications:
Infection
Bleeding
Delayed healing
Nail regrowth (if matrix phenolisation is not performed or is unsuccessful)
Nerve damage (rare)
Allergic reaction to anaesthetic or phenol.
Benefits of Toenail Removal:
Relief from pain and discomfort.
Resolution of infection.
Prevention of recurring ingrown toenails.
Improved nail appearance.
When to Seek Medical Attention:
Increased pain or swelling.
Redness or warmth around the toe.
Fever or chills.
Drainage or pus from the wound.
Any concerns regarding healing.
Consultation:
If you are experiencing toenail problems, we recommend scheduling a consultation with our experienced podiatrist. During your appointment, we will assess your condition, discuss treatment options, and determine if toenail removal surgery is right for you.

Ingrown Toenail Management

Ingrown Toenail Management
Ingrown toenails are a common and painful condition where the corner or side of a toenail grows into the surrounding skin. This information page overviews ingrown toenail management, from home care to professional podiatric treatment.
What is an Ingrown Toenail?
An ingrown toenail occurs when the nail plate pierces the adjacent skin, leading to inflammation, pain, redness, swelling, and sometimes infection. This commonly affects the big toe.
Causes of Ingrown Toenails:
Improper Nail Trimming:
Cutting nails too short or rounding the corners.
Tight-Fitting Shoes: Shoes that compress the toes
Trauma or Injury:
Stubbing the toe or dropping something
on it.
Nail Shape or Size:
Naturally curved or wide nails.
Fungal Nail Infections: Thickened nails are more prone to ingrowing.
Genetics:
Some people are predisposed to ingrown toenails.
Symptoms of an Ingrown Toenail:
Pain and tenderness along the side of the toenail.
Redness and swelling around the nail.
Warmth in the affected area.
Pus or drainage (if infected).
Home Care for Ingrown Toenails (Early Stages):
Soaking: Soak the affected foot in warm, soapy water 2-3 times a day for 15-20 minutes.
Gentle Elevation:
Gently place a small piece of cotton or dental floss under the ingrown edge of the nail to lift it away from the skin. (Only if you can do so comfortably, do not force it)
Pain Relief: Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage pain.
Loose Footwear:
Wear comfortable, open-toed shoes or sandals to avoid pressure on the toe.
Avoid Self-Surgery:
Do not attempt to cut or remove the ingrown portion of the nail yourself, as this can worsen the condition and increase the risk of infection.
When to Seek Professional Podiatric Care:
Severe pain or swelling.
Signs of infection (pus, redness, warmth).
Recurring ingrown toenails.
Diabetes or poor circulation.
Home care is ineffective.
Podiatric Treatment for Ingrown Toenails:
Our experienced podiatrists offer a range of treatments for ingrown toenails, including:
Conservative Treatment:
Careful nail trimming and cleaning.
Packing the nail edge with cotton or gauze.
Antibiotic ointment for infection.
Partial Nail Avulsion (PNA):
A minor surgical procedure performed under local anaesthesia to remove the ingrown portion of the nail.
Matrix Phenolisation: Application of a chemical to the nail matrix to prevent regrowth of the ingrown portion. This procedure is commonly done after a partial nail avulsion.
Total Nail Avulsion (TNA):
Complete nail removal may be required in severe recurring cases.
Preventing Ingrown Toenails:
Proper Nail Trimming: Trim toenails straight across and avoid rounding the corners.
Proper Footwear:
Wear shoes that fit comfortably and provide adequate toe room.
Regular Foot Inspections: Check your feet regularly for signs of ingrown toenails or other problems.
Maintain Good Foot Hygiene:
Keep your feet clean and dry.
Consultation:
If you are experiencing ingrown toenail pain or discomfort, schedule an appointment with our podiatry clinic. We will assess your condition and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan to relieve and prevent future problems.

Diabetic foot care & Annual Review

Diabetes can affect your feet in many ways, making regular foot care and annual reviews crucial for preventing serious complications. This information page outlines essential diabetic foot care practices and the importance of annual diabetic foot assessments.
Why Diabetic Foot Care is Important:
Diabetes can lead to:
Peripheral Neuropathy: Nerve damage that causes numbness, tingling, or pain in the feet. This can make it difficult to feel injuries or infections.
Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD): Reduced blood flow to the feet slows healing and increases the risk of infection.
Increased Risk of Infection: High blood sugar levels can weaken the immune system, making you more susceptible to infections.
Foot Ulcers are open sores that can develop due to nerve damage and poor circulation. They can become infected and lead to serious complications.
Daily Diabetic Foot Care:
Inspect Your Feet Daily: Check your feet for cuts, blisters, redness, swelling, or any changes in skin or nails. Use a mirror or ask someone to help you inspect the bottom of your feet.
Wash Your Feet Daily: Wash your feet with warm (not hot) water and mild soap. Dry them thoroughly, especially between the toes.
Moisturize Your Feet: Apply a moisturizer to your feet daily to prevent dry, cracked skin. Avoid applying lotion between the toes.
Trim Your Toenails Carefully: Trim straight across and avoid rounding the corners. If you have difficulty, seek professional help from a podiatrist.
Wear Proper Footwear: Wear comfortable, well-fitting shoes with adequate support. Avoid tight shoes, high heels, and walking barefoot.
Check Your Shoes Daily: Feel inside your shoes for any rough spots, pebbles, or objects that could irritate your feet.
Maintain Good Blood Sugar Control: Follow your doctor's recommendations for managing your blood sugar levels.
Annual Diabetic Foot Review:
A comprehensive annual diabetic foot review is essential for early detection and prevention of foot problems. During this review, our podiatrists will:
Assess Blood Flow: Check the pulses in your feet to evaluate circulation.

Personalized Treatment Plan: Enables the development of a tailored treatment strategy.
Prevention of Further Injury: Identifies biomechanical issues that may predispose you to future problems.
Improved Function: Helps restore mobility and reduce pain, allowing you to return to your activities.
Early Detection: Identify early signs of arthritis, tendonitis, or ligament injuries.
What to Expect During an MSK Assessment:
Our experienced podiatrists will conduct a thorough examination, which may include:
Medical History: Discuss your symptoms, past injuries, and medical conditions.
Visual Inspection: Observing your foot and ankle for swelling, redness, deformities, or skin changes.
Palpation: Gently feeling the bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments to identify areas of tenderness or abnormalities.
Range of Motion Testing: Assessing the flexibility and movement of your foot and ankle joints.
Gait Analysis: Observe your walking pattern to identify any biomechanical issues.
Muscle Strength Testing: Evaluating the strength of the muscles in your foot and ankle.
Specialized Tests: Performing specific tests to assess ligament stability, tendon and nerve function.
Biomechanical Analysis: Assessing how your foot and ankle function during movement.

What are they? Verrucae are viral skin infections caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They appear as rough, raised lesions, often with small black dots (blood vessels) within them.
Causes: Direct contact with the HPV virus, often in warm, moist environments (e.g., swimming pools, locker rooms).
Treatment:
Debridement: Removal of the thickened skin covering the wart.
Cryotherapy: Freezing the wart with liquid nitrogen.
Acid Treatments: Application of topical acids to destroy the infected tissue.
